Much of the literature that addresses clinical nurse leadership has emerged from North America and tends to concern the move from task-oriented nursing to transformational nurse leadership (Anderson et al 2003, Boyle 2004, Doran et al 2004, Houser 2003, Larrabee et al 2004, Pollack and Koch 2003).
In the UK, the literature underpins a ‘call to leadership’ (Cook 2001), while in Australia the emphasis is on the advancement of nursing practice through the development of, for example, clinical development units (Atsalos et al 2007).

Cook (2004), for example, has found that definitions of ‘nursing leadership’ and ‘nursing management’ overlap considerably, and that the terms are often used interchangeably.
Edmonstone (2008), meanwhile, describes how managers and clinicians take competing and conflicting approaches to leadership, particularly in meeting corporate goals and short-term targets.
Despite the confusion about definitions and the dearth of information about how nurses perceive leadership roles, however, researchers have identified a number of factors that can promote and prevent the success of clinical nurse leaders (Box 1).
According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (2007), clinical nurse leaders improve patient outcomes, enhance patient care and can act as advocates for reforming healthcare delivery. For this reason, Ireland is among those countries in which the development of nurse and midwifery clinical leadership roles has been embraced.
