To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, is the story of a family In the 1930’s, and how one trial change their life for ever. All in all an eyeopening novel that will change the way you perceive things forever. All told in the eyes of a young girl from Alabama named Jean Louis Finch, also known as Scout Finch. She tells us the roller coaster her and her family go through. Jem Finch (her older brother) her father Atticus Finch (who is a very well known lawyer in Macomb County )and their maid/baby-sitter Calpurnia have been living quite a peaceful and decent lifestyle. Well, lucky for Jem and Scout they have the most influential and courageous role model in my opinion which is their father. He is not only able to create a tiny ripple in the history of segregation. But also show the kids how to continue the ripple affect going and potentially change the course of segregation for ever. In the text it states, “if i didn 't I couldn 't hold my head up in town, I couldn 't represent this country in legislature.”(100) This just proves to us the great role model Atticus was. He was showing his kids from a young age to always hold their head up high even in unpleasant situations. Keeping this in mind this means that when the kids grew up they could speak about the injustice of segregation without feeling bad when others tried to push them down. Role Models like Atticus just increases the chance of making a change in history because of the kids were able to spread the message that segregation was terrible. Also in the text it states, "Best way to clear the air is to have it all out in the open.” (277) This is clearly depicting that Atticus is an advocate for the truth and justice of all things. Since his kids look up too him so much this may potentially rub off on them. Which in the end would get some sense into their heads that they ways blacks are being treated is unjustified and the truth must be prevailed in order to get the rights blacks deserved. Once again we see this concept of Atticus moral traits rubbing off on his kids and helping them be able to make a difference in history when their older. Lastly in the novel it states, "Courage is not a man with a gun in his hand. It 's knowing you 're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.”(149) This quote right here is probably one of the most empowering and influential things Atticus has ever said.
