Role Model Anesthesiologist

Decent Essays
As an enthused pre-medical student, I was ecstatic to observe and talk with a myriad of specialized surgeons and physicians that worked in my local hospital. As part of the capstone project for the middle college, I reflected upon each day of shadowing in a journal and reflected upon the experience overall at the end. I can compare what I had learned at the time to what I think of the experience now after working with patients for over a year. In addition to illustrating teamwork, leadership, and excellent communication skills at the time, I learned about the physicians’ lifestyles of working in the hospital and many of the challenges that are associated with these professions. I was enthused to overcome these barriers and become my role model anesthesiologist, who treated me many years before.

I shadowed an orthopedic physician assistant and learned about what they do on a daily basis. While there I got to see the role that he plays in a patients care and how him and the surgeon work together as a team. I saw his perform pre and post surgical visits, aspirations and injections, interpret radiology reports, and evaluate and treat injuries. I also had the opportunity to spend about 20 hours in the operating room in which I watched both the surgeon and physician assistant perform a variety of surgeries such as total knee and hip arthroscopy’s, ACL reconstructions, knee scopes, etc.…

My freshman year at the University of Georgia was one that was liberating in an unexpected way; I came into college as an enthusiastic Biology major, excited to start off my pre-med career. I heard about the public health field when taking a sociology course; in the class, we learned about the disparities of health and different factors contributing to the gap between the rich and the poor, and how one’s income affects their health. I took a health and wellness class, and I realized that I was deeply interested in learning more about how I could contribute to this field. My previous experience volunteering in a hospital and shadowing in a private practice gave me two different perspectives on the field of health.…

Ever since I was a little girl, my parents instilled the importance of obtaining an education; therefore, every day I would go to school with the primary focus of making them proud. What I came to realize as I got older was that school is not just about getting good grades; more than that, though, it is about learning and being able to implement all my knowledge throughout the course of my daily life. The experiences I have endured throughout my years in high school have been the most crucial in the sense of allowing me to feel for what it is that I am most interested in. My extracurricular activities have helped me branch out and explore what path I want to pursue. In the midst of all these activities, I have found my true calling-- to become an anesthesiologist.…

After I graduated high school, I began working as an orderly at Granville Medical Center. I was responsible for increasing time-efficiency in the surgical services department of the hospital. My roles included: assisting in moving patients, sterilely opening instruments, gathering supplies and instruments for future cases, turning over rooms and assisting nurses and other staff. Working at Granville Medical Center allowed me to regularly communicate with physicians and other medical professionals. From this I gained a greater insight into how medicine operates in a small rural…

I was born in the wrong century; a combination of an imperfect school education and broad parents produced a curious child who dreamed of many different occupations. Growing up in Fayetteville, North Carolina, I’ve seen interests and talents splattered across the entire state. There were Spring Lake Middle School sport coaches who researched different exercises for training players, cross country runners who dabbled in cancer research, and many more occupations. Thus, these people influenced my upbringing; and always pushed me to follow my dreams and to never give up. They see me at my low and always pushed me to my highest point.…
