While working for a startup, micro-sized accounting firm founded by my wife’s uncle, I found myself with the responsibility of leading the organization’s payroll service. In such a setting, this duty encompassed virtually all facets of business functions including sales, developing uniform system processes, managing information technology, nurturing client relations, and completing the payroll operations just to name a few. The company at that point grew from a single client having two employees to around 50 clients and a total of approximately 6,000 employees within a single quarter. Such growth paired with the lack of payroll-experienced employees within the organization led to a high stress environment fueled by crunched deadlines and on-the-job learning that usually led to serious error. Our team would find that in order to stay ahead of the deadlines from week to week, we would often need to work 50+ hours each week.…

Both, a leader and a manager are very important people in an organization. According to Collins (2001), managers and leaders “exist in different forms, roles and responsibilities”; as a result, Five Level Hierarchy exists, where level one has highly capable individuals, two is contributing team member, three is competent manager, four is an effective leader, and finally five is an executive. My assessment found my strengths to be with authority compliance (9,1) and team management (9,9). In terms of leadership style, I would consider myself more towards social leadership that focused more on teamwork, resolving disputes and providing support (Myers, 2013). Instead of directing the other group members on what to do, I distributed my authority with my group members by giving them the opportunity to voice their ideas as well as involving them in decisions making processes. I believed that group members felt more appreciated when their suggestions were acknowledged which then enhanced more creative and productive thoughts. This was due to the fact that brainstorming that involved the entire group encourages and stimulates ideas from different individuals (Nemeth, Personnaz, Personnaz & Goncalo,…
