Creating a psychological climate of safety in which the client is free to express without fear of ridicule or rejection is a key aspect. The client increasingly trusts and identifies with the therapist.
The client is encouraged to own their feelings and express them directly. Trust and open expression is further developed by a climate which allows risks to be taken and the experience of lack of negative consequences. The climate supports change by having clients settle into a flexible and nondefensive psychological state. Similarly, the warmth, openness and acceptance of the therapist supports that non-defensiveness and allows clients to face themselves and the therapist
