Roger represents the worst of mankind. When Goulding first introduces Roger he is described as “slight, furtive boy whom no one knew, who kept to himself with inner intensity of avoidance and secrecy” in which he seems more corrupt and savage than Jack (22). Later, Roger is found throwing rocks at Henry in which he was “[throwing] it to miss” and his “arm was conditioned by a civilization that knew nothing of him and was in ruins”(62). As it says “[Roger’s] arm was conditioned by a civilization that knew nothing of him and was in ruins” Roger is not going to be able to hold the much restrain of the “taboo of his old life” for much longer (62). As the novel moves forward, that restrain breaks. When they are hunting the sow, Roger “found a lodgment

Many people write a persuasive letter of extreme importance at least once in their lives, but, I would hope, for less grave of a matter than that of Roger Frethorne in his “A letter to Father and Mother”. As an indentured servant in colonial America, on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean from his English family, Roger uses rhetorical devices to express his plea to be saved from his servitude by his parents. Roger petitions the humanity of his parents through the use of the rhetorical appeal of pathos. He tells his parents that there is “much sickness, as the scurvy and the bloody flux, and diverse other diseases, which make the body very poor and weak” (Frethorne, p1).…

Roger was affected by the “taboo of the old life”, referring to his former lifestyle. His arm, according to the story, is conditioned to avoid hitting the boy because of that taboo against harming another person.…

Roger knows that he can do whatever he wants because there is “no parent to let fall a heavy hand”(Golding 60). Therefore, Roger can do anything he wants with no punishment given to him from adults. He uses his time on the island to get away from the rules of his parents and society. Because of this, Roger thinks it is ok to kill animals and humans. Killing piggy is an opportunity for Roger to break the rules he hates without the normal consequences.…

Roger, a violent and sadistic member of Jack’s tribe, kills Piggy, a social outcast and main source of reason, by dropping a boulder on his head causing him to fall “forty feet and landed on his back [...] Piggy’s arms and legs twitched a bit, like a pig’s after it had been killed” (Golding 181). Piggy is the only person on the island who reinforces societal ideas, like how they must follow the rules of who gets to talk, and how they must stop acting like kids. The boys often ridiculed him, finding him an annoyance to the fun they were trying to have on the island. With his death, society dies with him and their actions of savagery become more justified to them. William Golding’s Why Boys Become Vicious provides insight of “When people are afraid they discover the violence within them and when they are afraid together they discover that the violence within them can be almost bottomless” (“Why Boys Become Vicious” ).…

Previously in the novel, the author says,” Roger’s arm was conditioned by a civilization that knew nothing of him and was in ruins.” (Golding 60). This quote proves that when the boys were not a part of society they only had their conscience to hold them to society standards. Also, it shows that the boys were well behaved and were disciplined when they live in England. The boys’ survival mannerism would be destructive in society because of the chaos.…

“Roger gathered a handful of stones and began to throw them. Yet there was a space round Henry, perhaps six yards in diameter, into which he dare not throw. Round the squatting child was the protection of parents and school and policemen and the law. Roger’s arm was conditioned by a civilization that knew nothing of him and was in ruins” (Golding 62). At this time, Roger’s ego is still just barely under control, thinking about the consequences that used to come with his actions.…

In relation to human behavior, William Golding suggests that people follow what the majority of others around them are doing. On page ninety-one of Lord of the Flies, continuing onto page ninety-two (chapter five, Beasts From Water), there is a quote that relates to this idea ,“He gave a wild whoop and leapt down to the pale sand. At once, the platform was full of noise and excitement, scramblings, screams and laughter. The assembly shredded away and become a discursive and random scatter from the palms to the water and away among the beach, beyond night-sight”. This quote was at the point of the chapter where the boys (expect Ralph, Simon and Piggy) follow Jack because they think that it is the popular thing to do.…
