In the first few chapters, Hester Prynne, the main protagonist of the novel, The Scarlet Letter, has become an outcast from her society, on account of her infidelity in the eyes of the lord, a.k.a adultery. Her husband, however, was nowhere to be seen. The irony is that he was there, and witnessed her ostracization happen. The story’s narrator had made it clear that Roger Chillingworth, the Scarlet Letter’s main antagonist, is keeping something from the public. However, is not the only secret being hidden. Even Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, a renowned man by the town of Boston, has kept his infidelity to himself. Hester Prynne holds back his name, for fear of making his “ignominy” known.
