Literary nonfiction is a genre of writing that allows writers to mirror real life events and establish personal connections between the writer and reader. Because "Over the Wall" is based on the death of his wife it is a concrete example of a personal reflection form of writing. After reading this piece, any reader will understand that his overall reflection is what makes Roger Angell's " Over the Wall" a great read. It's as if he wants to keep her alive in his memory as he reflects on life without her. "Yes, but let's stay with Carol a little longer. She was seventeen years, nine months, and seventeen days younger than me (we had a different plan about dying), but now that gap is widening" (414). Angell also made sure to note that her death was unforeseen, as he most likely anticipated to die before his wife as illustrated in his thought within the parenthesis. His reflection within this thought captivated my attention as a reader because it's as if he does not want to move on.
