After reports and complaints, people thought that the officers shouldn’t be wearing their uniforms anymore for what they did. The officers were brought into court. The jury which consisted of mostly whites, acquitted 4 out of 5 officers. Officer Powell’s faint was still being decided. The freeing of the officers led to the 1992 L.A riots. The riots had caused 53 deaths, 2,383 injuries, more than 7,000 fires, damage to 3,100 businesses, and nearly $1 billion in financial losses. After releasing the officers, and the riots, the U.S government believed that Rodney King’s civil rights were denied. Officers Laurence Powell, and Stacey Koon were sent to prison for 32 months. The other officers were set free. Rodney King won the trial and received 3.8 million dollars. Many things remained unresolved. For one thing, the way the police department's watch over the police didn’t improved much. A human rights watch report noted that LAPD officers who frequently use significant force continued to act without being charged with anything, and just got away with a slap to the wrist.When this policy is not implemented with constant attention, police officers that pull people over often use excessive force and death may occur. One incident of this, is the death of Ezell Ford. Ezell Ford was shot on the ground after being pulled over for undisclosed reasons.
Even today, there’s still a lot of hate crimes going on. I believe there are many ways that we can prevent this because this is a serious issue. There have already been a lot of reforms made to several police departments, but it wasn’t enough. I like the idea of police officers wearing body cameras but I feel like it is isn’t strict enough. I believe the officers should be required to submit their film everyday. If the police officers are seen doing anything that breaks the requirement then they should be suspended.
