Rodney King And The Black Lives Matter Movement

Decent Essays
The fallout from Rodney King and the development of the Black Lives Matter movement has impacted my life significantly. Having two older black brothers, is often scary for me. I love my brothers so dearly and we are so protective of each other. It feels like I'm holding my breath, whenever they go out, in fear of them having any sort of run-in with the police. I am especially worried if they go out with my mom's car or my dad's car because they are luxury cars. My mom has been pulled over and questioned on whether or not the car was really even hers before. Being from the south only deepens my fears more when it comes to police brutality because prejudice is still very alive, especially in the south. Many people often worry about a family member

For many law-enforcement experts, the beating of Rodney G. King by a group of Los Angeles police officers in March 1991 exposed the shortcomings of professional policing. Any conduct that substantially deviated from the defined institutional mandate is deemed unreasonable (Sekhon, 2017). King, a 25 years-old black man, was beaten and kicked by four LAPD after a high-speed auto chase. He also was struck by a Taser electric gun. All the while, without the knowledge of anyone involved in the incident, a plumbing store manager named George Holliday was recording the scene from his apartment balcony with a video camera.…

In light of the release of the footage from the Rodney King beatings the rest of America caught a glimpse into the harsh realities that were actually taking place. For African Americans in LA watching the Rodney King footage They saw an all too familiar scene, for them this was common. The police officers who committed this offense saw their day in court and for most people the evidence of that footage was so damning it should have been an open and shut case. The hearing was moved into a predominantly white conservative area of Ventura with a practically all white jury with no African Americans.…

In the Summer of 2013, the Black Lives Matter movement came to fruition in the wake of George Zimmerman’s acquittal in the shooting of Trayvon Martin, a young and unarmed black male. Since then, the movement has demonstrated against other deaths of many black men believed to have been victims of police brutality. Despite the scrutiny behind police practices such as the chokehold and racial profiling, which are both deemed illegal, the police have not changed these practices and instead made them legal under different names such as the “headlock” and the “drug courier profile”. In response to the Black Lives Matter movement and the 2014 killings of NYPD officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu, the Blue Lives Matter movement was created. Instead…

LAPD captured Rodney King and as he came out from his taxi that he was driving, he was welcomed with a severe brutal beating and clubbed by the police about sixty times. After he had been captured, he was confined in jail by the police for four days in the pretense of conducting investigations. After the four days, the prosecutors alleged that they found no sufficient evidence to try him. However, this was just an excuse or mask to try to evade the three Los Angeles police officers who were involved in the crime. The act was considered by many citizens who watched the videotape of the police beating King, as one which the police used excessive force “After the video was screened on television, the “Rodney King beating” became the most well-known case of police use of force in history” (Martin, 2007, p. 30).…

The long term impact is felt in black communities where there little to no trust for law enforcement, and that distrust can carry over for generations creating problems for both law enforcement and african americans. The use of police stops whether it be traffic or stop, question, frisk have been seen as a way for law enforcement to target african americans. This policy leads to negative perceptions of police officers “living in neighborhoods where minorities are more likely to be stopped, frisked, and have force used against them may be associated with ill effects for neighborhood residents” (Sewell and Jefferson 2016). Often these tactics are viewed as biased towards blacks and other minorities “the potential role of implicit bias in producing disparity in police interventions was highlighted by a New York City judge in 2013 reflecting on the disproportionate representation of racial/ethnic minorities among people stopped and frisked by members of the New York City Police Department” (Fridell and Lim 2016).…
