Poe includes many supernatural events such as when the events of the story “Mad Trist” begin to occur in real life after occurring in “Mad Trist”. The narrator begins to pick up on these small occurrences as he reads the story and he notes “from some very remote portion of the mansion . . . there came . . . the echo of the very cracking and ripping sound which Sir Launcelot had so particularly described” (Poe 22). In order to further set up more peculiar events such as the return of Madeline and the death of Roderick, Poe begins planting strange occurrences such as the events of the book occuring in real life. These set of incidents give the narrator the sense that the house possesses certain supernatural characteristics. Eventually, several inexplicable events confirm the validity of the belief. For example, Poe examines how the supernatural equates to the beauty of the horrid as the narrator begins to describe strange natural phenomena such as the powerful gusts of wind which the narrator and Roderick experience. Once the wind begins to nearly blow the two characters off their feet, the narrator describes the storm as “tempestuous yet sternly beautiful” (Poe 20).
