Rocky Mountain Scout Ranch

Last Summer Heather Youmans went to Cimarron, New Mexico to backpack through the wild. She went to Philmont Boy Scout Ranch ,“Born in 1938 as Philturn Rocky Mountain Scout Camp, today’s Philmont Scout Ranch is a bustling center for high adventure and training. Youth and adults take advantage of the Ranch’s camping, training and work programs.” (Scouting.org). She was spending 10 days in the backcountry without electricity and carrying her essentials on her back. Heather went on practice hikes but she felt it was unnecessary to attend other classes because Heather’s family is well experienced with going on these kinds of trips. “It has 34 staffed camps and 55 trail camps that provide an unforgettable adventure in the high country along hundreds of miles of rugged, rocky trails”(Scouting.org). Heather would be outdoor hiking for ten days in “Tent City”, she started off packing her clothes, tent, first aid kit, and tons of food. “Food is very heavy”, she said. She went with Christian, who is a classmate, some of her close friends, and her older sister. Unfortunately, they were camping during flood season which was a constant threat to their safety and the camp had lost a camper from another group.

It symbolized how Philmont was about growing strong character. Heather’s favorite moment were when they hiked up a mountain, nicknamed baldy due to the lack of trees past certain points. It’s a windy mountain and goes up to 12,442 feet and while climbing you’d might be at a 45 degree angle, “It’s all loose rocks too so you’re sliding down as you struggle to get up this thing. But at the top it’s so beautiful, you can see the whole boy scout ranch from up there. You can see ponds and the few roads are really obvious. And you can see a 360 view of the surrounding mountains. You can even see all the way to Colorado!” Heather had

Camp is place unlike any other. It is a place that people’s wall begin to fall down and new relationships are formed. This is bound to happen when you drop 200 teenagers in the middle of the Smoky Mountains without any of their electronics. I was lucky enough to be chosen for the Project Serve team and got to see camp from a new perspective. I got to be a part of all of the behind the scenes work, but also daily interactions with all of the campers due to my job at camp.…

The Wyoming backcountry is stunning. There is an infinite blanket of trees in every direction. The sky has two moods either happy: blue with cotton ball clouds or angry: a stormy scary black color. The air smells like sage and pine -- fresh and crisp. July, 2015, along with 11 close friends, 2 counselors, and a trip leader I went hiking in the backcountry of Wyoming on a 6 day backpacking trip.…

TITLE Anza-Borrego Exploration: A Guide to Camping in the Desert LEAD PARAGRAPH When you think of camping, do you typically envision tents, grass, oak trees and bears (oh my!)? After spending the weekend camping in the vast Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, my notion of camping expanded tremendously. Ever since my first backpacking trip 6 years ago, I’ve had an affinity for the Appalachian Trail. I’m constantly looking for excuses to mash our lives into the giant, 50 liter bags, and hit the trail for a few days. This past year, in early fall, I convinced my parents to don their sturdy boots and disappear into the wilds of bear state park with me for three days. We were dropped off at the top of Bear Mountain and, while my parents argued over directions, I wandered around the windswept ridge.…

When we arrived to the trail, I took a glance around at my family.…

Ohio State’s learning communities give students a place to make friends and explore different learning activities; including, attending local field trips, making relationships with staff and professionals and participate in research and internship opportunities. The Women in Engineering learning community will help me enhance a small community within a large university. Engineering, a field that is 81.6% male, is a vital and important field in our society that has a lack of the female voice; making it imperative for women to find a place to conjure their ideas. I shall always remember my first year working at Turkey Hill Ranch. I have always possessed an enduring fondness of the lovely church camp over all the years I’ve spent there as a camper, but I never imagined that its unique nature and pleasant atmosphere would impart such invaluable wisdom. This quiet and seemingly insignificant breadth of woods and field, tucked away amongst the encompassing depths of central Missouri, gave me an abundance of clarity on the exceeding importance of humility, service to others, and a bit of hard work in the composition of effective stewardship. Before becoming a part of the Summer staff at Turkey Hill, I was often impressed at the smooth and continuous operation of the camp week after week, being that it was…

Each summer, I dragged myself from the sleepy summer rut in which I always fell and woke up for polar bear swims and archery practice. Although I have long since ended this routine, the camp greatly affected my social skills and my perception of nature and of my family.…
