Last Summer Heather Youmans went to Cimarron, New Mexico to backpack through the wild. She went to Philmont Boy Scout Ranch ,“Born in 1938 as Philturn Rocky Mountain Scout Camp, today’s Philmont Scout Ranch is a bustling center for high adventure and training. Youth and adults take advantage of the Ranch’s camping, training and work programs.” (Scouting.org). She was spending 10 days in the backcountry without electricity and carrying her essentials on her back. Heather went on practice hikes but she felt it was unnecessary to attend other classes because Heather’s family is well experienced with going on these kinds of trips. “It has 34 staffed camps and 55 trail camps that provide an unforgettable adventure in the high country along hundreds of miles of rugged, rocky trails”(Scouting.org). Heather would be outdoor hiking for ten days in “Tent City”, she started off packing her clothes, tent, first aid kit, and tons of food. “Food is very heavy”, she said. She went with Christian, who is a classmate, some of her close friends, and her older sister. Unfortunately, they were camping during flood season which was a constant threat to their safety and the camp had lost a camper from another group.

It symbolized how Philmont was about growing strong character. Heather’s favorite moment were when they hiked up a mountain, nicknamed baldy due to the lack of trees past certain points. It’s a windy mountain and goes up to 12,442 feet and while climbing you’d might be at a 45 degree angle, “It’s all loose rocks too so you’re sliding down as you struggle to get up this thing. But at the top it’s so beautiful, you can see the whole boy scout ranch from up there. You can see ponds and the few roads are really obvious. And you can see a 360 view of the surrounding mountains. You can even see all the way to Colorado!” Heather had
