Last Summer Heather Youmans went to Cimarron, New Mexico to backpack through the wild. She went to Philmont Boy Scout Ranch ,“Born in 1938 as Philturn Rocky Mountain Scout Camp, today’s Philmont Scout Ranch is a bustling center for high adventure and training. Youth and adults take advantage of the Ranch’s camping, training and work programs.” (Scouting.org). She was spending 10 days in the backcountry without electricity and carrying her essentials on her back. Heather went on practice hikes but she felt it was unnecessary to attend other classes because Heather’s family is well experienced with going on these kinds of trips. “It has 34 staffed camps and 55 trail camps that provide an unforgettable adventure in the high country along hundreds of miles of rugged, rocky trails”(Scouting.org). Heather would be outdoor hiking for ten days in “Tent City”, she started off packing her clothes, tent, first aid kit, and tons of food. “Food is very heavy”, she said. She went with Christian, who is a classmate, some of her close friends, and her older sister. Unfortunately, they were camping during flood season which was a constant threat to their safety and the camp had lost a camper from another group.

It symbolized how Philmont was about growing strong character. Heather’s favorite moment were when they hiked up a mountain, nicknamed baldy due to the lack of trees past certain points. It’s a windy mountain and goes up to 12,442 feet and while climbing you’d might be at a 45 degree angle, “It’s all loose rocks too so you’re sliding down as you struggle to get up this thing. But at the top it’s so beautiful, you can see the whole boy scout ranch from up there. You can see ponds and the few roads are really obvious. And you can see a 360 view of the surrounding mountains. You can even see all the way to Colorado!” Heather had

Later that night the tide rose and the waves were getting bigger and the men were rowing as hard as they possibly could, the water was cold and some of the men died that night from hypothermia and hunger. The next day the waters calmed and the Brigade along with Pierre arrived at Grand Portage, without a doubt Pierre knew he was going to make it. When they boarded the Port, they went to the market and traded all day with the merchants, and when they had everything they needed to get back it was already night, so they decided to stay the night and set up camp. Finally, Pierre and the rest of the brigade had a feast and with all the sores in Pierre’s body he was surprised to see that the men in the brigade had enough energy to fight and hike a 20-mile mountain if they wanted to. When it was time to eat, Pierre thought of how much his father would be proud of him for doing such a treacherous…

TITLE Anza-Borrego Exploration: A Guide to Camping in the Desert LEAD PARAGRAPH When you think of camping, do you typically envision tents, grass, oak trees and bears (oh my!)? After spending the weekend camping in the vast Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, my notion of camping expanded tremendously. Let me set the stage by laying out just a few of the splendors you’re likely to encounter on the trail: sand, wild flowers, palm trees, and, if you’re lucky, big horn sheep! If you stay the night, you’re sure to see some tents and campfires too, so no need to reframe your entire perception of camping. For a detailed account of this non-traditional campers’ wonderland, read on!…

Though it may not always be easy, the group of friends show an obvious growth throughout their camping trip. One way that the characters grow is through courage. All of the characters leave home to go camping. Before they leave to go camping, the narrator describes the situation; he says, “We were going to camp for a fortnight in Rhossili, in a field above the sweeping five mile beach” (165). Two of the guys in the group had been camping there before, but overall it was…

One hut housed a dozen soldiers. They were provided very little and the term “roughing it” doesn’t begin to cover their living conditions. Many were without shoes, and clean water was a luxury. On my one and only vacation last summer, I got the privilege on going to my first Younglife camp. The camp name was Carolina Point in Brevard, North Carolina. At the camp they had many activities: swimming, go-carting, disc golf, mountain biking, zip-lining, paddling boarding, and hiking. My favorite part about this trip was the day we took a whole camp trip to hike the nearby mountain. At the camp they had some kids with disabilities that couldn’t necessarily get up the mountain by themselves.…

It was March of 2015 that Dan and I decided to make our first camping trip of the year. This particular road trip was not like the many others we have pursued. When we arrived, we were led by the event staff of Hoopla in the Hills to an open field. We pitched our tent and canopy in the breezy ice cold morning.
