Rockville Landfill Summary

The second landfill location that I researched is located in Rockville is called the Gude landfill. Unlike Millersville, I’ve actually been in the general area of the site, though I’ve never toured the landfill personal. Gude encompassed about 100 acres at 600 East Gude Drive in Rockville, and was in operation from 1964 until 1982. In the following years, the Gude landfill site was converted into housed a gas-to-energy facility. Author Nathan Carrick explains the reason for this transition in his article. He states that the conversion was due to the reports of toxins leaking into the nearby Rock Creek, which in turn contributed to contamination and leaching. At the time the situation was so dire that according to Carrick, “Cyanide, lead, mercury,

Due to regulations in the past, Farnsworth Paper Works, Inc., has an increasing buildup of fly ash on our property that has not been properly disposed. We would like to propose solutions to the Department of Natural Resources to allow us to receive permits to convert about half of our fly ash into low-grade fertilizer and to dispose of the rest of the unusable fly ash into the landfill on our property. Introduction Background Farnsworth Paper Works, Inc., which is regulated by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) office for region 4, produces over a thousand tons of fly ash every year. Fly ash is an inorganic remnant resulting from wood waste burned for heat. Previously, Farnsworth disposed of the fly ash into the back lot that is a permeable landfill, which was given a Type III classification and that meant it was any unprepared land area used for waste disposal.…

Abstract This paper details the causes and extent of the pollution at Tar Creek Superfund site in Ottawa County, Oklahoma. This Superfund site is a heavy metal-contaminated area that was created by the aftermath of zinc and lead mining operations throughout the 1900s. The pollution has put local inhabitants at risk of different health issues, and while risk assessments have shown that no significant health risks are obvious compared to the rest of the state of Oklahoma, blood lead levels have been recorded to be high in Ottawa county children. Many different organizations, both government and private, are involved in the remediation of Tar Creek Superfund site.…

Prior to the 1980’s and environmental laws and concerns, it was a standard unwritten procedure to dump waste on the ground, rivers, streams and oceans. Unsuitable boxes, containers and storage units for keeping waste were inadequate and often toxic substances were left out unsecured. These practices were happening destructively everywhere in the environment and thousands of contaminated sites were created. Contaminated sites often included warehouses, landfills, processing plants and manufacturing sites. The superfund program in 1980 was imposed by congress to clean up these contaminated sites based upon health concerns of the people, environmental risks and possible ecosystem destruction.…

There were about 9 different chemicals that were mixed with diesel fuel for the treatment of wood. These chemicals included pentachlorophenol (PCP), Chlorinated dioxins and dibenzofurans, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), and heavy metals. Instead of disposing the waste the correct way, the company reportedly dumped the waste into a well. That well led to underground water underneath the facility. The underground water led to a stream which empties into the Delaware River. There are about 26,000 people that lived within a 1 mile radius from the Superfund site.…

The Chattahoochee River, Georgia’s most heavily-used water source, is home to a variety of fish and a supplier of over 70% of the drinking water in metro Atlanta; it was also ranked number three on America’s ‘most endangered’ list. Each day, more than 250 million gallons of sewage waste water is dumped in to river, so news that the river is constantly contaminated with E. coli is no surprise. Even with the vast amount of contamination, Georgia allows the dumping of waste to continue; they give out permits to dump in the waters. Without proper laws and regulations, the continued dumping of waste on the Chattahoochee River will eventually cause it to become too contaminated for human use and wildlife survival. The Chattahoochee River begins in the northeast of Georgia and continues down 524 miles to Apalachicola Bay, Florida.…

As the Pacific Northwest started to become known and resources started to become majorly exploited and shipped, we slowly become what we are now, not a hinterland. After all the overuse and misuse of the land we are not and will never hinterland again. The definition of a hinterland is defined as parts of the country that is less developed and unchartered. The Pacific Northwest use to be a hinterland, but as this area grew with the railroad system that brought people here.…

In the case study of Gilbane Gold, David Jackson, the engineer responsible for waste treatment in Z-Corp, was put in a very difficult situation. In the beginning, David was getting results from Frank’s waste water discharge tanks that showed that they have been releasing arsenic and lead at higher levels than what the city allows. The waste water ends up into the popular and profitable sludge product called Gilbane Gold. Gilbane Gold is sold as a fertilizer to farmers for about 75 years. David mentions his concern of this in the monthly meeting.…

Inspired by a forsaken orange that sat in a North Carolina parking lot, Jonathan Bloom wrote American Wasteland to examine the growing problem of food-waste in America. I think Bloom did a tremendous job by presenting this looming issue. His numerous anecdotes pertaining to food-waste creates an innate sense of relatability, which in turn direct readers’ attention to the statistical and logical presentations of the issue. This is an impressive feat because Bloom avoided coming off as preachy or judgmental in a book that attempts to raise awareness of something that general Americans have already decided it’s not important (xvi). As a result, Bloom’s systematic way of examining every aspect of America's habit of wasting food comes off as interesting…
