Rockhurst Lessons

As my time at Rockhurst comes to a close, I have realized that the most important lessons that I have learned has been how to be a well-rounded young man. Since my first day, I have heard that the charge of the Jesuit schools, going back to St. Ignatius of Loyola, is to create “men and women for others” and to instill the ideals of the “grad at grad” repeated countless times. While I did not know what those sayings meant at the time, I now know that Rockhurst has prepared me to be a leader and young man as I start the next chapter of my life. Being a man for others means that I need to put the needs of others and the community in front of my own in context with the five characteristics of the grad at grad. This means that one must be knowledgeable when it comes to different faiths. One way that I have been religious at Rockhurst is taking part in Kairos. At this retreat, I was able to take time and focus on how I can grow as a person while reflecting and praying. This retreat helped me to realize the importance of faith in my life and a relationship with God. A man for others needs to realize that he cannot go through life alone, but rather, needs to place his trust in God that He will guide him during his life. Moreover, a man for others needs to be loving and be able to personally connect with those to which he is helping. After hearing the tragic news of Harrison Rupp, I reached out to my teammates on the Swim and Dive team. I told them about my battle with depression and how we need to speak up if we need help. After the funeral, I immediately began to comfort my friends by giving them hugs and helping them to talk about their feelings.
