Rocketry Dance

Jetlagged after a redeye from San Francisco, without caffeine to alleviate our early-morning exhaustion in a tranquil Virginian meadow, my teammates and I managed to stay attentive to assemble our model rocket for a practice launch before facing the top national aerospace teams competing for the title of Team America Rocketry Challenge champion. With our rocket in hand, my teammate stared at me with a blank expression, silently asking what’s the next step? Rather than explaining the procedure, I exclaimed, “Do the dance!” Recalling the choreography I taught her to remember the steps for assembling our rocket, she swung a cupped hand over her head then made a fist and lowered it back in front of her, which signified the first step of removing the rocket nose and placing the payload inside. After some movements she said, “I remember! Pack the parachute in the …show more content…
From a young age, as a little girl who was initially forced to do ballet, dancing has opened up a level of creativity where I can challenge, strengthen, and utilize the art of dance in all realms of learning, from the stage to the classroom to my own introspection. Through movement, dance has allowed me to express my emotions, thoughts, and even words – as demonstrated in my “rocketry dance” – and emancipate myself from physical and mental confinement. Throughout high school I joined Mexican Folklorico and the Bollywood and Tahitian dance clubs, which intensified a passion for learning movement of different techniques, forms, and cultures. I challenged my own ability by creating my own movements and sharing that personal choreography with others. Performing at school assemblies washed adrenaline waves over me as I shared a personal choreography while the dancing made me feel skilled with grace, rhythm, and art. I cherish the joy of learning choreography, so I use of the joy of choreography to

After reading Art and the Community: Breaking the Aesthetic of Disempowerment I began thinking about where I stood on dance in the community, dance involving non typical dancers and dance as a therapeutic activity. As I was brain storming I realized I had much stronger opinions on these issues, than I realized. As a dancer, when asked what dance is to me I commonly refer to dance being an art form that allows me to express myself in a raw form. In the article Art and the Community: Breaking the Aesthetic of Disempowerment the groups of people Jabado worked with were allowed to express themselves although they are not your typical dancer.…

One woman dressed in black with a blue and green striped skirt comes to the middle of the grassy stage, front and center to perform a mini solo at the halfway point of the routine. Her arms gracefully rotate up and over her head, creating an arc-like picture, several times at an even pace with the live musicians while her legs move at a pace twice as fast underneath her. The woman’s lower body shuffles across the natural, green landscape, with such control and energetic execution. The other performers and musicians join in with cheers of encouragement and enthusiasm, telling me that they are just as happy performing, as I am watching them dance. With a bright smile on her face, she continues this tiring movement for several counts before continuing with the other performers behind her in a slow tempo tendú-step gesture.…

Simply put, I love dancing. I like moving my hips to the beat, feeling the rhythm inside my body like an electrical surge, enjoying every second of the music. Years have passed since I first started dancing, but I still have the same enthusiasm as if I am performing for the very first time whenever I hear a song that I danced to. Yet, dancing can be exceptionally intimidating and challenging, so much that I question my rationality at times.…

“When your music begins, you will be in competition mode.” I took a deep breath, it was showtime. I was introduced to the world of competitive dance in August of 2011 and ever since, dance has been the outlet for all of my emotions. I started off as a shy little girl who hid in the corner, barely extending her limbs as I attempted to mock those in front of me. As time elapsed, I persevered through challenging ten hour practices and the taunting of my peers.…

“Professional ballet is not just something that you do; in a very deep sense it is who you are.” (Wainwright, Williams, and Turner, 2005, p.49). As this quotation suggests, dance is often considered a major source of identity for dancers. Mainwaring, Krasnow, and Kerr (2001, cited in Eusanio, Thomson, and Jaque, 2014) suggest that one’s self-identity is often defined by one’s work- for dancers, their work is their dancing, hence their identity is defined by dance. Therefore, this may be particularly applicable to student dancers who have grown-up dancing.…
