The Importance Of Rock And Rock Formation

Decent Essays
While it may not seem like it, rocks and rock formation are a vital part of our day to day lives. Some geologists spend their lives studying these rocks to determine what rocks are in certain areas and how they formed. This information allows them to predict what is going to happen in the future as well as how the land got to be in the shape it is today. Experienced geologists can often know how a rock formed just by looking at it, but inexperienced geologists can easily do the same, if they know and keep in mind how certain types of rocks form. Igneous rocks have different textures, compositions, and formation locations which can be used to infer how and where a specific rock formed. With igneous rocks, texture does not refer to roughness or smoothness of the surface. “Texture” instead refers to crystal size, shape, and arrangement within the rock. Texture is determined by how long the lava or magma takes to cool (Rutzky). Rocks with larger crystals had longer cooling times, giving the hot minerals time to crystallize and grow. On the flip side, rocks with small …show more content…
Composition is the rocks chemical and mineral make up. The exact composition of a rock can only be determined by advanced geologic equipment. Luckily, however, geologists without those resources can determine the composition of a rock (felsic, intermediate, mafic, or ultramafic) through color identification. Generally, felsic and intermediate rocks will have much lighter colors while mafic and ultramafic have very dark shades. This is caused by the amount of silicates in the rock. Mafic and ultramafic rocks have less silicates while felsic rocks are composed primarily of silicates. Intermediate rocks are a midpoint between felsic and mafic, meaning they have more silicates than mafic and ultramafic rocks, but not as much as felsic rocks (Reynolds 113). One exception to these guidelines is obsidian: a dark colored felsic rock

With the numerous choices of countertop materials on the market, it's often difficult to determine which will be the best choice for your home and for prospective buyers. Granite has long been the top choice for homeowners for their kitchen countertops, however quartz is now taking the top spot, and for good reason. Appearance - Quartz, unlike other stone slabs, can be designed with a controlled appearance. The way quartz slabs are crafted allows the fabricator to provide you with the exact color, texture and pattern that you desire. Whereas with granite, you will have to hand select the pieces you want to use to make sure the patterns are similar and will match your color scheme once installed.…

In the TPMP, there are specific areas such as the Rattlesnake Mountain Sill, located in the western part, that has the best exposed sill with medium to fine grained syenodiorite rock in the northern and southern regions of the mountain (Carman, 1994). The textures in these rocks go from a glassy devitrified content to very fine grained on the surface and medium to coarse grained in the center where contact with country rock and fast cooling cannot occur (Carman, 1994). The major minerals contained within these basalts are augite, olivine, Fe-Ti oxides, and biotites which contain compositional zoning, and zoning in feldspar grains and some pyroxenes (Carman, 1994). Phenocrysts occur on the cooled edges of the Big Bend sills which, when present in a magma intrusion, are rather important because the settling of phenocrysts signifies the major factor in differentiation in intrusions (Carman, 1994). However, phenocrysts are very rare in the Rattlesnake Mountain Sill contact rock, but that does not rule out the possibility of flow differentiation that may have reduced the phenocrysts along the borders (Carman, 1994).Plagioclase grains have a bimodal size distribution with the smaller size having a greater plethora than the larger of the two because the larger ones were transported in by…

The Sierra Nevada is the longest mountain range in America and it lies partially within the parks. Along this range lies Mt. Whitney, at an elevated height of 14,491 feet and considered the tallest mountain within the lower United States. In Sequoia National Park, resides another prominent ridge of mountains called the Great Western Divide and it has been posed as the rival of the Sierran Crest. The topography and its gradual formation was the result of the uplift of the southern portion of the Sierra block over an elevation of 8,000 feet during the Plio-Pleistocene time (Konigsmark 2002).…

The first piece of evidence that points to a non-traditional formation of the Rocky Mountains is the rock composition of the ranges in this area. The rock composition in these areas is not sedimentary like we would expect to see in the traditional convergent boundrie folding type of orogenic event. But rather, it is composed mostly of basal igneous rock that seems to have inexplicably risen up from deeper portions of the crust (Pendick and Denial, 1997). The second, and most problematic, question as to the formation of the Rocky Mountains is, how did the mountains form so far within the interior of the continent? The central and eastern portion of the Rocky Mountains is thought to have formed during the Laramide orogeny; which is believed to pre-date the Jurassic and early Cretaceous accretion of the terrenes that make up the North American cordillera.…

The theme of empowerment is found both in “When It Changed” by Joanna Russ, and “A Rock Trying To Be A Stone” by Sergio Troncoso. Additionally, the characters in both stories express their eagerness, self sufficiency, and self awareness. It is essential to discuss self characteristics as such, along with empowerment because of the simple fact that it is relevant to society, and we can learn from it. Empowerment is something people should be aware of today, because it encourages, and motivates to be the best person you can be. Additionally it strengthens character, being powerful and confident.…

For this assignment I chose to watch the musical movie Rock of Ages. This movie is high energy and has fun and frisky choreography. With professional dancer Julianne Hough as our leading lady in the film it is tough not to get caught up in how the movement tells the story. After watching it I did realize there were several moments where they stopped dancing and that seemed to work for the story as well. From the start we get the urge to move with the opening song Paradise City.…
