Rock music had come a long way throughout history, but some things didn’t change. One is still being looked down on by parents and officials for its terrible influence. From the pelvic thrust of Elvis Presley, sexual lyrics from Little Richard, political statements from, use of drugs, and many more which degrades moral values, people tried to restrict the music being reached to the young audience. There are other reasons that people want to censor music. The difference in ideologies, especially between different generations. It can also be the fear of change or the things they do not know or understand as well as not being comfortable with. They believe that music has too much “power” and the artists and their music are to blame for influencing their audience and the behaviors. One was the Parent Music Resource Center or PMRC that was created in 1985 by the wife of the Secretary of the Treasury, James A. Baker III. The PMRC was created because of the parents’ concerns of the explicit lyrics being exposed to children. According to them, their goal is to inform parents and be aware of the music that their children are being exposed to (Brackett, 410). The action they ask for is too extreme for wanting to “educate”. They do not need to go to the government to teach parents how to take care of their children. They as music industries to “voluntarily” put labels or do things, which does not count as censorship.
