History of Rock and Roll
Final Paper Pop, a popular music genre that has originated from the Western World that has continued its relevance in the 21st century. It began to be a softer alternative to rock and roll in the 1950s and eventually became one of the most popular genre by the youth; which is where it got its name ‘pop’ from. Pop music is somewhat a contrast to rock and roll. Rock identifies with a particular subculture while pop tends to cut across audiences targeting one crowd. Pop also focuses on vocals and beat unlike rock and roll; which mostly focuses mainly on instruments like bass and guitar. However, like rock and roll, pop lyrics often speak about romance, nostalgia, depression, pain, and other varieties of other themes that may be social or political. Popular music or pop music, often gets its inspiration from other genres and styles like urban music, rock, dance, Latin and country. It was the first single released from her single ‘I’m Breathless’ in 1990. “Vogue” is an upbeat, dance-pop house song that set many trends of dance in music. This song was inspired and borrowed from a dance called vogueing which was a very popular type of dancing in the LGBT community in the 90’s and often danced in gay clubs. This song was significant because it allowed Madonna to use visual imagery, which perfectly complimented the music. The music video for “Vogue” was shot in black-and-white containing style inspiration from the 1920’s with dancers vogueing. It has been performed in 6 different tours and at the 1990 MTV Video Music Awards and the Super Bowl’s halftime show. Madonna popularized this style of dancing into mainstream culture and “Vogue” became the number 1 hit the summer it was
