Robin Phillips Case Study

PROS o Robin Phillips is regarded as a charismatic, highly talented director o He will be an incredible asset to the theatre with his experience with a major cultural center like London. His experience is complimentary for successful operation in Toronto. o He has a reputation to be very successful in running theaters.

CONS

o While Robin was known for his success he also had a reputation for being aggressive. o When he was managing the London Theater, they saw more turnover o Robin’s administrative was not as good as his theatrical sense, which will result in a potential failure to execute his expensive plan

If his plan is adopted it will not help the theatre succeed. More importantly he does not have the administrative or financial background to successfully execute this plan.

My recommendation would be to hire an artistic director and an administrator for the theater or someone who has the ability and experience to do both. I will recommend the growth in two phases. The first phase would be a broader reach through television adaptation. Make minor updates with limited budget. And then in phase two make the next level improvement. I will take the strategy for growth and make it long-term strategy to soften the

For my final project, I chose to collaborate at the J-cat Cultural Arts Theater under the supervision of Michael Andron. The play that I collaborated on was called “Shrek the musical”. My initial duty in this play was to control the character’s microphones. However, due to low tech staffing, I was offered an open position in lighting, and even though I did not get the chance to be in the booth to control the microphones, I was able to see how both sound and lighting played an important role in this play. Ever since lighting rehearsals started, I was able to see how the lighting changes the mood of the scene and how each actor, when they were in the spotlight, had their own unique story to tell.…

Initially I started this assignment by carefully reviewing over the worksheet given to me before the in-class assignment. The assignment was to create a scene with “silent tension” and to incorporate several elements such as a moment of pause. Even though I might not have to direct the scene, I started to think in a sense of how a director might approach this assignment and create a scene. I started to reference the “dead theatre” essay written by Peter Brook. I wanted to create a scene that the audience could emotionally and spiritually relate to.…

To examine the evolution of stage management, we must first examine how the term came about, and other terms for the stage managers predecessors. Then we can begin to look into how the role has evolved over time into the present craft students are being taught on technical production courses in theatre in different locations around the world.
