In year 1750 the French were able to come up the Mississippi and crossed the Ohio River to discover Pittsburgh (Phillips 32). Above all, this land was great for timber and had lots of game animals to hunt. This land was also good for many soldiers to settle because it had all the material these soldiers needed to keep living (Lorant 32). The French actually built a few forts in the area, including one on Lake Erie and one in present day Franklin, PA. Furthermore early French settlers coming from Canada and early English settlers were both working there ways towards each other to conquer the same land Pittsburgh was indeed the meeting point (9-10). In May of 1754, George Washington led a small group of soldiers to attack the French. In what is now Unionville, PA, the British fired upon the French, and killed many of the soldiers. Even though the war wasn't declared for another two years, this was the first bloodshed of the French and Indian War. In 1758 the British Secretary of State, William Pitt, developed a plan to overthrow the French ("What"). As Britain became even more powerful, on November 24th, 1758 they planned to attack, but the French soldiers had already burning Fort Duquesne to the ground out of fear of the British troops. However, small battles continued in the forests around Pittsburgh (Phillips
