Roberta Bondar- Geography ISU
Roberta Lynn Bondar was an astronaut, physician, educator, and a photographer. Roberta was the first female Canadian astronaut to visit space (she was the second Canadian astronaut to visit space after Chris Hadfield). She was born on December 4, 1945, in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. As a child, she had always found space fascinating. Now that she looks back, she believes that this fascination has led to her career as an astronaut. She attended the Sir James Dunn High School in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
At first, Roberta Bondar started off her career during 1982-1984, being appointed as an assistant professor of medicine (neurology). But in 1983, she was chosen to be a member of a group of six Canadian astronauts and then started to train to be an astronaut in 1984 at the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). She was selected to be a payload specialist in early 1990 for the first ‘International Microgravity Laboratory Mission.' However, on 1994, Roberta left the CSA and retired as an astronaut to continue with her research work. She also enrolled in a professional course to spend more time with her photography. Bondar was so inspired by the beauty of viewing earth from space that Bondar had to explore the earth further on its ground. She photographed all forty-one of Canada’s national parks.
