Director Robert Zemeckis Robert Zemeckis has directed many films ranging in genres. His films include Cast Away, Back to the Future, Annie, A Christmas Carol, Forrest Gump, and Flight. Zemeckis has earned a reputation as a “tech-savvy auteur whose work has explored special effects and digital magic” (Ressner 2013). Zemeckis grew up in a working-class family with little, to no money, in the south side of Chicago. He grew up watching television often but his mother exposed him to movies at a young age. Zemeckis was inspired by an English literature teacher and by the movie Bonnie and Clyde to get in to writing and directing. Zemeckis worked summer jobs during high school at a local commercial …show more content…
Zemeckis used several close-up shots to show Forrest’s reaction to events that happened during that time period. Zemeckis also used the dolly movement to show Forrest running in the movie. Both the close up shot and dolly movement can be seen in the following video clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgnJ8GpsBG8 . “The spatial relations between Forrest and his company maintained the 180° system which not only preserves continuity in the shots, but it also supports the emotional connections between Forrest as the storyteller to his listener” (Sebastian 2013). The Mise-en-scene in Forrest Gump can be seen in the décor that was used in the jungle scene when Forrest and his unit were ambushed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPPaZU18rUg . There were several trees and bushes, along with dirt and mud, and it was raining. Explosions were happening all over the place and they were in full military gear. This particular scene was “based in the jungle over in Vietnam during the time of the war” (forrestgumpfilmandnovel.weebly.com). Two motifs in this film were the feather and his running shoes. The elements symbolized the character and life of Forrest. The feather was symbolic of his life and how life flows with its ups and downs. The shoes were symbolic of his freedom from the braces and from life in general. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZ2SWXwoYwQ . Zemeckis used many elements …show more content…
When Tom Hanks is in the plane, all the camera shots were done with a Steadicam and each shot was hand held. When he crashes on the island the camera is set in place and Zemeckis only used the tilt and pan features. When the camera did move in this film, it was like a surveillance camera. In the final acts of the movie, Zemeckis used a camera on a moving crane to get all his shots. Editing in Cast Away was done by Arthur Schmidt in coordination with Zemeckis. One example of editing is “before the plane makes impact with the sea there are a few direct eyeline match cuts, meaning that the film transitions from the character to the image he or she is viewing from Chuck to the view Chuck sees out the planes window back to Chuck again” which can be seen in the following you tube clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLi_w5rCH1I (Specht 2012). Sound is also an important part of the movie Cast Away but instead of music and sound effects being used a lot, dialogue is used to help the viewer relate to Hanks and Wilson (the volleyball). An example of the type of sound used can be seen in the following clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlX5hzBG4Zo . “Tom Hanks, Chuck, finally is able to make fire and he excitingly expresses himself, which indicates that he is pleased with himself and his tone of voice not only sets the mood of joy in the scene, but also sustains the audience’s attentiveness by boosting their
