Robert W. Woodruff
Robert Winship Woodruff was born in Columbus, Georgia in the year 1889. He was president of The Coca-Cola Company from 1923 to 1954. He died in Atlanta, Georgia in the year 1985 at the age of 95.
He was the son of Ernest Woodruff, a banker at the time. He went to the Georgia Military Academy ,and he attended Emory University from 1908 to 1910.
In 1910, he became a machinist's apprentice ,and then a salesman at the General Fire Extinguisher Company. His father then hired him as a salesman, and buyer for his Atlantic Ice Company in 1911. To be exact, he gave $350 million dollars in his lifetime, mostly anonymously. Most of it went to Emory University. At the end of 1979, he gave Emory University three million shares of Coca-Cola stock. At the time that was worth about $100 million dollars, and it made the total amount of money Robert gave the University $200 million dollars.
In 1937, he created the Trebor Foundation(Trebor is Robert backwards), which was renamed to the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation after he died. Right before he died, Coke executives gave him the new formula they developed. This was the first change they made to it in nearly 100 years. He approved it before he died, but, people didn’t like it, forcing the old formula to come back.
During the time he was in charge of Coca-Cola, the sales increased from $31 million dollars to $7.36 billion dollars.Soft drinks alone accounted for 80% of its profits. Robert’s biggest accomplishment was the transformation of Coca-Cola to a national name to a name known around the world. He remained the president until 1939, when he became chairman of the board. He switched positions over the years, but, it didn’t really matter what position he was in, he was still in charge. Coke became a symbol of America because of Robert Woodruff. I wish I could have met such a successful and brilliant man such as Robert
