According to the first four accounts by Fulcher of Chartres, Robert the Monk, Baldric of Dol and Guibert of Nogent in chapter two of The Crusades: A Reader Pope Urban II called upon all of the Christians (the wealthy, the poor, knights, farmers, father, son) in Europe and neighboring regions to come together as one force and to travel to the Jerusalem (The Holy Land) to take it back from the wicked and sinful who have apprehended it and take it back from those who oppose Christianity. Example finding relics and got this sense of honor and pride and would face the enemy head on and according to the accounts by people who were there this was a successful way to fight, but many lives would be taken. The one tactic that seemed to work the best for the crusaders was called “siege or sieging”. This tactic composed of surrounding the enemy within a walled in area and setting up defenses on the outside. By doing this the crusaders would cause the enemy within to run low on resources and eventually give up and surrender or come out to fight. If the enemy decided to come out and fight they would be tired and hungry meaning they would not be up to par to fight against the crusaders waiting for them on the outside. Also by doing this if the enemy would try to have supplies brought in the crusaders could easily fight them off. This tactic was used when the crusaders were trying to take Jerusalem. The crusaders encircled much of the city and set up camp. By doing this the enemy within could do nothing but wait for battle. By sieging the city this gave the crusaders time to build machines such as ladders that would help them climb the high walls and over take the city. Sieging helped dwindle the enemy inside and the ladders helped the crusaders breach the walls and fight off the infidels. If it was not for the tactic of sieging the city the crusaders would not have had time to prepare and build machines to help take the city and the enemy within the walls would have been much
