Robert’s passion for art was evident even when he was young. Even though their relationship changed throughout the story their mutual care and respect for each other were unwavering. Robert had a considerate nature, however, he was particularly caring towards Patti and was keen about protecting her. For example he often worried about their future and financial situation:”[…] he worried incessantly about our future, how we would survive, about money”, which implies that he had a genuine concern for the mundane practicalities in their life. He also showed concern for her career:”Robert would never compromise, but oddly enough, he kept a censorious eye on me. He worried that my confrontational manner would hamper my chances of success”, which demonstrates how he not only cared for her physical well-being, but also about her dreams and aspirations. However, his determination and dedication to art did not hinder him from having meaningful relationships and he was able to both fulfill his dream and help Patti realize hers. By being passionate, ambitious and caring he was able to live the life he dreamed
