Constantly we long to adjust our reality, but we are unable to do so, therefore we must learn to change our perspective. Once reality does change, it might change for the better or the worse, and then we once again will need change our perspective. Jim is the hero in Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. The Departure of Jim’s journey consists of the Call to Adventure and the Beginning of the Adventure. The Call to Adventure is when Billy Bones enters into the Admiral Benbow Inn. After he enters, Jim’s life completely changes, with strangers, usually pirates, coming to the inn. An extreme wide shot and an objective point of view would be used in order to show all of the characters in the inn, introducing all of them.…

Intro: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain is a classic novel read throughout schools all over the world in several languages and a sequel to the famous story of a rebellious southern boy who becomes a rich hero, Tom Sawyer. After having read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer in 7th grade, I wasn’t very impressed with the style of writing and I was far from entertained, but now after being forced (yet again) to read a Mark Twain novel based around the same characters I have more an open mind and understanding of literature than I did a few years back when I first met Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. I chose a key chapter to focus on that takes place near the end of the novel. Chapter 37, the chapter I chose, focuses on the process of freeing Jim from confinement after being wrongfully sold by the ‘King’ to Tom Sawyer’s relatives.…

The conflicts that occur in Treasure Island, such as treasure and good versus evil help depict the development of Jim Hawkins. The main conflict of the novel centers around the major theme of treasure, which in the beginning of the novel motivates the party to sail to Skeleton Island; however, once the party reaches the island the treasure losses momentum as a theme due to developing maturity of Hawkins and the coming mutiny. Continuing, once the mutiny occurs and Hawkins is separated from the Captain and Squire he is seeks solace in Benn Gunn. Shockingly however, Benn Gunn proves to be more valuable to Jim than the treasure at that moment in time due to Gunn’s knowledge pertaining to the island. As Hawkins realizes the treasure is invaluable…

Bernard Williams’s example of the moral dilemma involving Jim killing the one individual to save 19 is an interesting one that provokes much thought and it is a decision that utilitarian followers would find quite easy. Utilitarian’s subscribe to the view that everything that you do or do not do should be for the sake of maximizing total happiness, or utility. But individuals who subscribe to a different moral philosophy could potentially have a myriad of ethical concerns associated with making such a decision. In this paper, I will explain the moral dilemma that is presented in Bernard Williams’s piece, hypothesize what the utilitarian would do in that situation, why they would choose to do that. I will also demonstrate why Williams’s dilemma provides valid evidence to reject utilitarianism on the grounds that it weakens a person’s integrity, sense of responsibility, and their moral character.…
