In chapter 1, "On Leadershp", Mr. Gardener outlines a foundation of leadership by indicating, followership is achieved when the flow of influence and communication goes in both directions. He also states that positional authority dose automatically mean that subordinates will be followers. Many people debate the logic of being a leader verses a follower, and come to the consensus that neither is wrong, and in fact we need both leaders and followers to have a successful society. What makes the difference, however, is whether the one following is lead like a cattle being led to the butcher, or whether he is an advocate for himself and those around him. When the follower blindly follows orders and is nothing more than a 'cow standing in the rain' then he is not only useless, but causes more problems than whatever good he may have caused by doing his job whilst knowing what consequences his actions have, instead of merely doing his job to get it done. The leader needs to know that his men need a reason, a drive, a passion, and not…

I would hope that in my six years prior to being promoted to an assistant principal, I would have laid the foundation for positive relationships with the students, or at least some pocket of students. Additionally, I would think about the mindset of not necessarily the students, but the current faculty and staff and begin to measure the outlook that is currently in place. From here I would want to make changes that lead the community to a more positive mindset and outlook.
