At the age of 5 when he took a family trip to Germany his grandfather gave him some interesting rocks which sparked his interest in all types of rocks, he wanted to know all about each kind of rock, how it was made and why each was different from the other. Later on at the age of 11 with a room full of rocks and many books on the topic and still fascinated with rocks he joined the New York Mineralogical Club, all the other members were adults and when he gave a talk on rock collecting at the age of 12 they were all shocked with how much he knew, especially at such a young age. Even at the age of 9 he showed just how advanced he was for his age, this includes the fact that he could fluently speak both Latin, and Greek. Not many people, including adults knew how to speak any of these languages, and if they did it wasn't really fluent. While growing up, his life was pretty much the same including the fact that he still wasn't good at making friends so he only had a few and they were two boys whose intelligence was close to
