Irvin Welsh: Filth The second research I gathered for building the writing style of my story came in the form of 2 novels by Scottish writer Irvin Welsh. Both of these novels came with far more parallels towards how I was to develop the structure of my own story than Of Mice and Men. One such parallel is the use of first person narrative and present tense.…
A man named Lawrence Otis Graham, visited his old junior high school. When returning to the school, he was shocked by seeing a recurrence of the all- black table lunch table at the cafeteria. He was mindblown when seeing the black table 14 years after his adolescence. The all- black table was still there along with the other segregated tables.…
In Robert Lipsyte’s essay “Jock Culture,” he defines a societal standard he refers to as Jock Culture and relates it to political, judicial, and societal actions. Lipsyte defines Jock Culture as a warped version of sports, in which individuals will intentionally do anything to win even if it includes jeopardizing one’s health, intelligence, or family. Due to this win-at-all-costs mentality, Lipsyte states that the Jocks who participate in Jock Culture are more likely to be hired and treated with celebrity-like status than their lesser counterparts, the Pukes. At the beginning of the essay, Lipsyte says the Pukes are those who do not have the win-at-all-costs attitude and are just normal individuals such as himself; the Pukes, however, are disrespected and belittled because of their disinterest in Jock Culture.…
For both of these authors this gives them the advantage of having their audience read the essay with an increased sense of agreement, despite the topic, because of the similarity in presentation with…
In the short story, Jock Culture , Robert Lipsyte discusses his interview with the Columbia University crew coach, Bill Stowe and the difference of what he called “jokes” and pukes”. He describes the jokes as “brave, manly, ambitious, focused, patriotic, and goal-driven” people and the “pukes” as “wolly, distractible, girlish, and handicapped” (Lipsyte, 305). I would call myself a jock just because I was a 3-season athlete throughout high school. I was captain of my high school volleyball team and my senior year year was named “League All-Star”, along with multiple other awards. Along with playing volleyball all year around, I also played basketball and golf.…
Many people write a persuasive letter of extreme importance at least once in their lives, but, I would hope, for less grave of a matter than that of Roger Frethorne in his “A letter to Father and Mother”. As an indentured servant in colonial America, on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean from his English family, Roger uses rhetorical devices to express his plea to be saved from his servitude by his parents. Roger petitions the humanity of his parents through the use of the rhetorical appeal of pathos. He tells his parents that there is “much sickness, as the scurvy and the bloody flux, and diverse other diseases, which make the body very poor and weak” (Frethorne, p1).…
Robert Yates wrote a letter to the federal congress concerning the freedom of people’s rights being stifled by the relatively small amount of representatives that are elected. He believed this form of organization would eventually lead to a tyrannical or monarchal government. Robert Yates was born January 17,1738 in Schenectady, New York and became a figure who was known for his views on the rights of the people. He studied law in New York with William Livingston and became admitted to the New York Bar in 1760. In the pre-revolution years Yates was apart of the Radical Whigs, who were against corruption.…
Martin Luther King Jr. uses many rhetorical strategies in his letter to Birmingham. While reading the letter I noticed he enjoys to show his knowledge of historical features and names mentioned in the Bible. King starts off the letter (paragraph 2) with who he is and why he is in Birmingham. He then gives the comment that he is apart of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, showing he is a christian and later on finding out he is a minister.…

In Translations, by Brian Friel, language is used as a mechanism to feature the many issues of communication within the characters’ small Irish village. Throughout the play, Friel attempts to advocate for the Irish language because he believes that language represents one’s identity and historical background. Unfortunately, the town, and specifically the local school, have been appropriated by British officers, whose main goal is to transition the school into an entirely English-spoken school, as opposed to allowing the residents’ native Irish language. To begin, a few characters presume to be the main people this act focuses on; Maire, Doalty, Bridget, and two English soldiers. These characters have various views on…

Along with Formal Education is Life a classroom of Lived Experiences? In the words of John Adams, “There are two educations. One that teaches us how to make a living and the other how to live.” Learning both these forms of education not only helps in a trade or a profession, but also helps in getting liberal education as human beings.…
