Robert Frost’s uses an AABB rhyming pattern in his short but powerful poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay”. Frost packs a lot of observations of nature in this short poem. In the first line, he states that first, nature ‘s green leaves are gold meaning that in its early stages, the leaves start out as golden beauty. He then says that leaves cannot hold the golden hue well. In the third line, he clarifies that a leaf starts out as a flowering bud, but that only lasts for a short time. Then he describes the degeneration of the beautiful golden buds into leaves, just as the Garden of Eden became less beautiful after sin entered, or as the golden light of dawn morphs into the brilliance of daytime. He ends by stating that gold cannot last.
