“Stay gold.” The poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay” by Robert Frost has a few themes that can be related to in S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders. Both the poem and the book have many similarities between their themes and events that take place. A quote that had stood out to me in the poem was, “nothing gold can stay.” This portrays the theme of, “all good must come to an end.” In The Outsiders, PonyBoy Curtis Was forced to cut his long hair off, which he loved to a high content in, order to change his appearance. He had said that it made him a greaser and was a big part of his personality. Cutting all his hair off was sort of like an awakening in a way, too. Pony was forced to mature a little and started seeing people for who they really were instead of behind their stereotype or “social mask.” Relating to “nothing gold can stay,” PonyBoy’s hair gave him confidence and eventually had to come to an end, but in the long run he got something good out of. …show more content…

Through the novel, ‘The Outsiders’, Hilton has proven her point in which all young people should have a sense of belonging. Ponyboy, the main character as well as a member of the Greaser gang and he believes that belonging to a gang is the reason to the safety of his friends and himself; he has someone to rely on. Johnny, Ponyboys best friend as well as another member of the Greaser gang, needed the urgent sense of belonging as he wasn’t overly supported by his own family and “he would have run away a million times if [the gang] hadn’t been there”. The absence of Johnny’s own family was replaced by the gang and it was as though he had family right there; the Greaser gang. By showing and elaborating the character Johnny, Hilton strongly displays how Ponyboy believes that belonging to a gang is not only important but also comforting.…

The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, is about the story of a boy named Ponyboy, who lives with his brothers and is apart of a gang called the Greasers, and they are rivals with another gang called the Socs. The novel is the story of how they relate to one another, and the story of growth in Ponyboy’s life. The poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay” is included in the story, as recited by Ponyboy to Johnny, to make a statement about gold. The poem discusses an unfortunate aspect of life, that being that the young cannot stay young, just as the leaves cannot stay green. At the end of the novel, Johnny tells Ponyboy to stay golden, which means to hold on to the good aspects of his life.…

The poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay" was first published in 1923 in America by the acclaimed author Robert Frost, whom at the time was thought to have a hostile view towards nature (Twentieth-Century Literary Criticism). Imagery in literature refers to use of descriptive terms in the hopes of making the reader experience the scenery of the text in their mind. Symbols are utilized mainly works such as narratives to represent something greater than what is actually mentioned. Personification is the device most often used by authors writing fictional works to refer to an immobile object as a live being. Robert Frost is recognized poet most known for his recurring mention of nature in his works, "But Frost acknowledged that nature strongly informed…

“After Apple Picking”, written by Robert Frost expressed the main idea of aiming for a perfect anything (in this case harvest) that is not realistically possible can cause emotions of disappointment, and despair, as well as provide challenges such as lack of motivation, and cause people, such as the apple picker to overlook the apples that can still be used and to instead ignore them. The main idea of the poem is to represent the fact that by focusing on one thing to much you are also letting good things slip through your fingers without recognizing it. The first example within “After Apple Picking” that supported the main idea of this poem would be the harvest of the apples. “I am overtired of the great harvest I myself desired.” This quote from the poem represents how the apple picker focused so much on a perfect harvest that after years and years of hoping and being let down and disappointed he is finally giving up.…

Although both “The Road not taken” (756) and “Nothing Gold can stay” (654) have different meanings they are also similar in many ways. Robert Frost tends to use a lot of nature imagery in most of his poems including both of these. Usually the nature imagery he uses has nothing to do with the true meanings of his poems. He is well known for using nature to describe a situation or place.…
