Robert Duvall In Apocalypse Now

As far as movies go Apocalypse Now is at the very top of my list pertaining to favorite movies; although Robert Duvall performance as LtCol Kilgore may only last but a few moments, his portal of the character for me is one of the most enjoyable parts of the movie. Duvall has a history of both appearing in movies as supporting roles and delivering a performance that somehow always seems to stand out as one if not the most memorable scenes of each movie. Apocalypse Now is no exception to this rule! His role in this movie as LtCol Kilgore is prodigious, Duvall does an exception job of capturing the essence of his character. His ability to showcase the attitude and personality of a season warfighter is apparent, from his swagger walking across the hot LZ on the beach to the gaze in his eyes as he delivers his epic line in the movie, “Do you smell that? Napalm, son. Nothing else in the world smells like that. I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know…The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill, smelled like... victory. Someday this war's gonna end.” At that point in the movie, one is able to develop a connection to the action. His role in Back to the Future cast him as slight in stature but heroic type character, which is difficult for one to visualize as the two personas are not typically paired together in Hollywood. However, his acting style and ability made it easy for the viewer to believe in the character. Fox’s ability to use comedy throughout the movie allows him to overcome odds, such as the scene where his character Marty goes up against Biff in the diner. This scene highlights his use of smarts and wit that is utilized throughout the movie that would not have been successful perhaps with a lessor
