Robert Cialdini's Non Rational Norm

In my honest opinion, I find all of Robert Cialdini’s non-rational norms, to be much simpler than I expected, but they are also much more significant than
I was expecting as well. I also didn’t realize how often they would all come in to play into everyday life. This concept is very interesting to me, but I can also see how people could be very torn as to if these matters were rational or non-rational.
When it comes to reciprocity, I feel the biggest reason this is non-rational is because it just simply isn’t fair. Some people are more capable of doing for others, and for someone to be able to use that as manipulation towards someone less fortunate is morally wrong to me. I think this tactic could easily be used to manipulate people, but

You are much easier manipulated in small instances at a time instead of all at once, so once you start something making small steps, like investments for example you are much more likely to spend if you are already decently invested. And the same as the rest I feel this is non-rational too.
The liking factor or feeling like you should do something because that person is important to you or you just because you generally like them. For example, when a celebrity endorses something on television, you never know if they actually use it but since you’re a fan, you will more than likely buy and they get paid for tricking you! This I also believe is non-rational.
Authority may be the most manipulatable of all, considering it is much easier for people in power to gain what they want. The authority tactic, would be you feeling obligated to do something because someone in a position of power said you should. For example, if you knew someone had an extensive education, you would be more inclined to listen to them than a regular individual (trust me, I’m a

Every person has weaknesses, and someone may use those weak points for his own benefits. Thus, manipulation and exploitation of weakness easily take place more than people think. For example, fraud happens frequently by acquaintance or anonymous people in modern society. William Shakespeare shows examples of how one can control others and exploit their weaknesses in the plays, Hamlet and Othello. Characters in each play, especially antagonists, instigate tricks, deceptions, and manipulative stratagems against other characters.…

Humans are logical thinkers, in fact the most logical, yet it is easy for us to make decisions and act irrationally. We crave not to work more efficiently, nor to be better contributors to the society, but to feel safe and feel good, which is why car manufacturers use safety as their selling point. Emotion is the driver and we are the cars. Our personality and habits fluctuate with our emotions such as love, pain, anger or excitement.…

The three components shared by most of the weapons of automatic influence described in the book are: the mechanical process in activating weapons, the exploitability of this power by those who know how to trigger them and the way the weapons of automatic influence lend their force to others (Cialdini 2007). Animal behaviorist M.W. Fox discusses how mothering turkeys are all triggered by one thing: the “cheep- One of the most recognizable weapons of influence in our everyday lives is the rule of reciprocation, or repaying what one has provided us. This rule is overpowering, enforces uninvited debts, and can trigger unfair exchanges. These three aspects of reciprocation can be seen in the Regan study. This study tested and proved that those…

Norm violations are common in society today. Norms are defined as being “expectations of ‘right’ behavior” (Henslin, 49). There are two types of norms: folkways and mores. Folkways are a type of norm that are not strongly implemented, meaning that to go against this type of norm is not as severe as going against a more. A more is a type of norm that is forcefully implemented.…

Authority is also one of very powerful tools that Dr. Robert Cialdini proposes in his book. We all have our idols or celebrities that we love. We follow what they wear, what they say, how they speak about something. For good or bad, they have gigantic influence. It is not a coincidence that famous brands use athletes, actors, politicians and singers to send their message and promote brand.…

Artifice In the excerpt “Empire of Illusion” by Chris Hedges argues that “ the most essential skill … is artifice.” After reading the passage, I agree with Chris Hedges because in Political Theater and Consumer culture that is the most popular skill. Artifice is important because people use this skill to confuse others that do not know what is going on. People with this skill cause problem because they are tricking people into believing stuff that is not true.…

When a person in authority uses their influence to get what they want, it’s manipulation. Americans fell under the influence of manipulation by going to war with Japan. Considering that leaders only have to “tell [the public] they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to greater danger” in order to make people go to war, it’s easy for authority to use their influence to manipulate the people (Goering). After the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, killing over a hundred thousand Japanese people, Americans considered these deaths a victory because those in authority declared that it was. Americans listen to those in authority because of fear, a fundamental part of human nature.…

There are many examples of places in which manipulation is used today. One such example is in the politics. Political leaders, for example Donald Trump, try to sway the public 's emotion so that they will get elected for office. Just like in the real world, there are many different areas where manipulation occurs in the play Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare. These areas include manipulation in politics, manipulation within your family or friends, and manipulation within ourselves.…

There are essentially two primary sources of power: positional power and personal power. As the name implies, positional power means that the leader’s power only comes from their title or position in management within an organization. Personal power, on the other hand, is a result of the leader’s individual influence over others. Personal power is basically a form of earned power in that is gained through the leader’s actions or behaviors toward others, as well as their work. However, the biggest difference between these two sources of power is that personal power also is given to a leader directly by their followership, while positional power is only in accordance with the individual’s official position or title.…

Influence Tactics Self-Assessment I use legitimating tactics and ingratiation tactics most often of time when I manage people because legitimating tactics is logically and clearly to everyone. Many people think legitimating tactics are nor efficiency because it verifies authority to work by contract or regulation. However, I think legitimating tactics provide fare and easy understanding, which means everybody can understand the problem clearly and same level. For example, when I used to work at the hotel in Japan, I had to use this tactic a lot because Japanese society tends to follow the rule which means follow the traditional way. We had so many strict rules and policies, but there were no rewards or any praise.…
