Women were controlled and restricted from doing what they desired. Their husband tried to control their every move and succeeded. Both resulted in the woman to suffer, either physically, mentally, or both. However, the final reaction of these women differed given they occurred in different centuries. The Duchess was written in the mid nineteenth century and indicates that regardless of how women were treated, they didn’t dare to speak up or do something without the consent of their husband. They remained quiet and followed the order of their husband, which eventually lead to them being killed. The true story of the woman’s marriage was written in the early twentieth-first century and shows that the woman gained enough courage and willpower to leave her husband without asking for his permission. She took matters into her own hands and helped herself get the life where she had her rightful power back. Over the course of about two centuries, women have become brave enough to speak up against their husband, to truly speak their mind, and to do what they desire without seeking

Have you ever had that feeling of disliking someone for no apparent reason? It is interesting how people can find hate or discomfort from the simplest of things, especially when there is no reason to dislike it. An example of this phenomenon is the monk’s anger and envy towards Brother Lawrence in Robert Browning’s “Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister.” The dramatic monologue features a speaker who has a deep hate for one of his brothers. The conflict with the monk and Brother Lawrence is correlated to modern day culture and TV shows such as the Fairly Odd Parents and The Simpsons.…

Robert Browning has written the poem in the strict form of an iambic pentameter which was common in traditional, classic, English poetry, suggesting not only that the Duke was very orderly and formal even when addressing lower ranked individuals in private, but also hints at his controlling nature. However, the frequent use of enjambment and parenthesis “(since none puts by the curtain I have drawn for you, but I)”, and a metaphor “as if she ranked my gift of a nine-hundred-years-old name”, suggests that the Duke is unable to assume control of a number of things including; firstly, his speech, his emotions and also, the control of his previous Duchess. The line is indicative of power that she has over him to cause significant turmoil in his mind and implies that the only way that he is able to fully assert his power over her is in her…

Robert Browning’s poems, most notably, “Porphyria’s Lover and “My Last Duchess,” are two works that share a common theme. This theme began to arise in the living years of Browning, but has become more prominent in todays world. Both poems exhibit men who are seemingly normal in the beginning but at the end we find are very disturbing. Both men were in a loving relationship with a woman who they presumably killed. Much discussion has come about from these two poems, not because of the blatant murder, but each man’s emotions before and after the murder.…

The poem ¬¬¬My Last Duchess alongside the novel The Handmaid’s Tale conveys a strong sense of patriarchal power. Browning demonstrates the patriarchal power of the Duke throughout the whole poem, from a rhyming couplet of the poem “that’s my last duchess painted on the wall, looking as if she were alive, I call”, the use of personal pronouns emphasises the power the Duke possesses over the Duchess. Browning utilises symbolism, enjambment and an allusion; “Notice Neptune though taming a sea-horse” allowing the observation of a parallel between the relationship of the Duke and the Duchess, and Neptune and the seahorse as the Duke’s intentions to assert dominance over his future Duchess follow the same pattern as Neptune’s taming of the seahorse. Additionally, the euphemism “I gave commands; then all smiles stopped together” makes reference, through alliteration, to the transformation of his last Duchess into a medium to which he is no longer subject to her “trifling” situation and can exert his power and control over who is exposed to her smile.…

As he tells the story of how the former duchess does all of these acts that he doesn’t appreciate, thanking everyone and being happy with more than just his presence. However, he shows his ego “through his very skill in speech” (Miller 33). Unexpectedly, the young girl’s interpretation of the Duke is vastly different from the rest of her class, thereby leading her to struggle with having a contentious opinion in addition to dealing with the realities of womanhood and teenage relationships. Author Laurence Perrine states in his article, "Browning 's Shrewd Duke", “I shall contend, quite otherwise, that the Duke, vain and proud as he assuredly is, is also a shrewd bargainer and master diplomat who, while exposing himself fully to the reader, not improbably obtains high commendation from the emissary in his report to the Count. Inordinate egotism and intellect frequently cohabit…and vanity, though it puffs a man up, by no means necessarily blinds him in matters of self-interest… The Duke is compounded of egotism and astuteness, cruelty and politeness, pride of possession and love of art, all at once… Our reactions to the Duchess are controlled by the warmth of her response to compliments, by her graciousness to inferiors, and especially by the things she takes delight in: the beauty of a sunset, the gift of a bough of cherries, a ride round the terrace on a white mule. Her response to these things indicates a genuine and sensitive nature, which takes joy in simple, natural things rather than in gauds and baubles or the pomp of position and power which attract the Duke.…
