This source is an extract from “The memoir of Robert Blincoe,” published in the lion in 5 weekly episodes from 25 January to 22 February 1828. It is a personal story from a young boy's perspective who worked in one of the mills. It explains that the conditions were terrible, especially the stench. The strong smell, made the boy feel unwell resulting in taking a moment to sit down. He soon found out that sitting down was not allowed. The boys taskmaster explained that sitting down was forbidden in the workplace and the boy was possibly given the strap as a punishment. It is a interview that captured a woman's perspective on what it was like working in the mill. Elizabeth Bentley is 23 and she began working at the age of 6. This story is a prime example of child labour, starting work at a young age and not being treated right. Elizabeth states that if you slowed down while doing a job there were punishments, including being whipped by a supervisor. “The girls had black marks on their skin many times.” There was not a lot that could be done, as parents wouldn't dare to complain about the conditions, as they were afraid that they would lose work. The conditions that people had to work in were terrible. Elizabeth explained that the part of the mill that she works in is the card room which is very dusty. As Elizabeth worked long shifts and had hardly any breaks the dust got to her lungs which caused her health to deteriorate. Due to no health and safety, Elizabeth is now deformed. “When i pulled the baskets all heaped up, the basket pulled my shoulder out of its place and my ribs have grown over it.” This source is consisted to be fairly reliable has it is a govenmentment based interview.
