Railroads spanned the nation making the movement of goods cheap and reliable. Leland Stanford along with his partners Collis Huntington, Charles Crocker, and Mark Hopkins made this growth possible. The four men were New Yorkers who came to California during the Gold Rush and developed the railroad that made the entire west easily accessible.
