Rob Reiner's The Princess Bride

The director of the Princess Bride that I have studied employed film techniques and narrative conventions to construct heroes and/or villains. The Princess Bride tells us a story of two unlikely lovers who overcome extreme difficulties in order to be together.

The Princess Bride was made in 1987 and directed by Rob Reiner. They also made a book which was published in 1973 and was written by William Goldman. The story tells us a servant boy who falls in love with a Princess. After a long period of time he returned from being a pirate he came back in all black clothes and came to save the Princess but faced things like sword fighting and fighting with a giant but in the end he lived happily ever after with the Princess in there castle.

What we make of life in the time we have is the idea that David Fincher presents in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. He shows a character that is different because he experiences life backwards, however he enjoys life and meets new friends and emotions. This is in direct contrast to the portrayal of Benjamin by Francis Scott Fitzgerald who shows a character who is not accepted into society because he is different and thus he lives out his life alone. The idea that you live life essentially alone, if you are different, is more effective in engaging the reader and creating a thoughtful response from an audience who connect to the basis of…

On the Patriot and The Alamo The essence of movie is the head to head battle between the “hero” side and “villain” side. When it comes to historical film, taking a side is difficult since there is no right or wrong in the history. However, movies become more engaging when viewers place themselves into the main character, the “hero” side, even if this character is hard to evaluate. The two movies, the Patriots and the Alamo, clearly follow the model that good movies leverage viewers’ affection and compassion towards main character’s side.…

Every now and then after watching a certain amount of movies you’ll come across one that has an undecipherable meaning, but certain parts of the movie will stick with you for a while. Nicolas Winding Refn’s Valhalla Rising is a good example of that. The story revolves around One-Eye, a silent ruthless Viking warrior who had been enslaved for years by a chieftain He sets out on a quest to regain his own freedom and cleanse his own soul by helping a small group of Christians crusade to Jerusalem. Being the 3rd film that I have seen of Winding Refn’s my only expectation going into this film was that the setting would be visually lavishing and have well-constructed cinematography. It didn’t take long for that to occur in the film as within the…

“Feminist film theory criticizes classical cinema for its stereotyped representation of women. Its aim is to adequately represent female subjectivity and female desire on the silver screen” (Smelik). What constitutes a feminist movie for me, is having a female character be able to express all her characteristics. Showcasing female characters in movies as an independent woman who does not need a man to save her is letting the audience see a different side to females in movies. In the Disney movie for example, almost all the princesses are saved by a man or have a man by their side throughout the journey in the movie.…

The Lord of the Rings trilogy deals with many unsettling implications about our society, culture and humanity. J.R.R. Tolkien lived through World War I and World War II and wrote The Lord of the Rings trilogy during these times. In the novel, Lord Sauron created a ring to rule and use as a weapon in order to conquer all of Middle-earth. The Ring symbolizes a power without any limits and can corrupt all the characters in the novels. This immense power the Ring possesses, usually overrides any sane thought and turns the wearer of the ring, evil.…

This fairy tale teaches society that even though someone may have achieved a heroic feat, such as the little mermaid saving the prince, they may not be renowned for it. This is evident when the little mermaid is rejected by the prince who thinks the young woman from the convent is his rescuer. The prince tells her, “The youngest of them found me on the shore, and saved my life. I saw her but twice, and she is the only one in the world whom I could love; but you are like her, and you have almost driven her image out of my mind”, showing that he truly loves his supposed rescuer (Andersen). That lesson of an unknown hero was lost as the tale was adapted into modern society.…

The auteur theory offers a distinct view on films, stating that the movies portray a part of the director and is signed with the spesific qualities of the director. In his essay, “Towards Theory of Film History”, Sarris defends that the auteur theory changed the way film critics valued films. This theory was revolutionary since it brought a whole new set of values against Hollywood filmmaking. In Hollywood, the director is only good as his/her last movie. No movie industry executive will care about the previous accomplishments of a director, if his last movie did not make the revenue the producers were expecting.…
