Roaring 20s Flaws

The 1920s were a time of innovation, change and inspiration, the 1920s often referred to as the “Roaring 20’s” are regarded as a defining moment in the history of the world. Technology was being invented and innovated, there was lots of change in the lives of many and it served as an inspiration for how people rebounded after the First World War. However, the “Roaring 20s” had many flaws that are not discussed as often which raises the question if the 20s were truly roaring, the 1920s had many more flaws than positives which leads to the conclusion that the 20s were not roaring but were in fact scarring for many individuals. In addition to the mandate on residential schools, a large number of immigration policies were put into place. These policies enforced the xenophobic emotions that many Canadians felt. In fact many Japanese immigrants were heavily discriminated against and in 1928 only 150 Japanese were permitted to enter Canada, along those lines the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1923 was put into place and this banned the entrance of individuals of Chinese heritage into Canada. Considering the fact that there were Chinese in the country who had helped build the Canadian Pacific Railway, this act showed how ungrateful and discriminative Canadians were in the 20s, with the public urging the government to deport Chinese Canadians. Paired with the xenophobia was classism, in 1925 coal miners in Nova Scotia were being paid small wages for hard and laborious work, this fits into the concept of classism since when they spoke out about their problems it was ignored and even when they were on strike their problems were still shunned to the side as if they weren’t
