Roanoke Island: Defeat The Spanish Armada

In August of 1587, a group of about 115 English settlers arrived on Roanoke Island, which is now called North Carolina. Later in the year, John White, a governor, would sail back to England to get food and other tools that they needed. However, once he arrived, a major war broke out between England and Spain. Therefore, Queen Elizabeth I called every sailor to help defeat the Spanish Armada. When John White came back from England in 1590, there was not a trace on where everyone went or what happened. However, the word Croatoan was carved into a wooden post and shards of pottery were also left. Croatoan was the island south of Roanoke that was a home to a Native American tribe. Some say that the Natives killed or abducted the people from Roanoke. …show more content…
Researchers found pieces of early gun flintlocks, firearm, a metal hook for stretching animal hides or tents, a small copper tube used to secure wool fibers. These objects support the idea of the Roanoke people moved in with the Native Americans and that these items were a part of their belongings. Another item that researchers found was a watercolor map most likely made by John White. On the map they found a tiny four pointed star colored in red and blue. The star marked a location that was fifty miles inland. This evidence supports the statement that Roanoke people went to this destination.
