This primary source document is a newspaper advertisement about the 1741 conspiracy trial. Its main purpose was simply to advertise Mary Burton’s accusations and to announce the award money in return for finding the conspirators. The intended audience was anyone who read the newspaper and who were “interested” in the looking for the conspirators (and the money, of course). I thought this was pretty trustworthy source, but I am aware that the information came from an UNtrustworthy person, Mary Burton. The excerpt stated that one of the people Mary accused was none other than her master.…
In the 17th century, many events caused tension in colonial society. Many of the events resulted in revolt, protest, and even execution. Bacon’s Rebellion of 1676 and the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 reflected the underlying tensions in colonial society at that time, mainly including economic inequality, the gap between the blacks and the whites, social differences, the wealth between the lower class and the high class, and religious influence, how the Bacon’s Rebellion of 1676 wasn’t influenced by religion, but how the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 was. The Bacon’s Rebellion of 1676 and the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 reflected the economic inequality of the colonial era through methods of scapegoating and large scale rebellions.…
Between the lack of a clear organizational pattern and the lack of cited sources within the text, the overall book suffered. This lack of outside voices was supposed to create a more fictitious, story-like format. Frances Hill, although her intentions were different, created a read that was seemingly simple for the non-historian, but in reality was difficult to read without more previous background information than a basic high school U.S. History class could provide. Hill’s book will show an increasing importance to how educated people think of the Salem Witch Trials, especially as time goes on and people create new stories about the mass hysteria, whether it be from a fungi in the water that creates LSD type symptoms to legitimate witchcraft. Even now, Hill’s work is seen as beyond acceptable and thorough, showing an importance in clear, concise, and accurate documentation of the Salem Witch…

Helen Keller once said, “Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through (an) experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.” In literary works, the crucible can represent a hard test in a time of a severe trial. The author of The Crucible, Arthur Miller, ingeniously chose the word as the title of his play because several characters, Abigail Williams, John Proctor, and Judge Danforth, experience very hard tests of character throughout the story. Even though many can argue every character goes through an extreme test, Abigail Williams, John Proctor, and Judge Danforth go through the most difficult tests of character during the play, which ends up proving who they really…
The primary purpose of a government should be to protect and serve its people, right? Not always. Consider this; what if the government 's top priority is really itself? In Arthur Miller 's The Crucible, the government turns selfish, exhibits corruption, argues evidence, and becomes unfair to its people. Governments become corrupt and unfair as they move away from the best interest of the people to preserve their own reputation as seen through the actions of Reverend Parris and Judge Danforth. One example of government only looking to preserve its reputation is exhibited in Act I when Parris attempts to save face.…

A few centuries later, a similar issue called McCarthyism would come up, and yet again, destroy people’s lives. In the Salem trials, however, innocent people were killed, and there was one main man to directly blame for those lost lives: (Judge) Thomas Danforth. While Danforth seemed very pretentious in Arthur Miller’s adaptation of the trials, the script and characters were embellished.…
