The Roanoke colony was the most famous failed colony in all. It began when Sir Walter Raleigh wanted to explore the East Coast of North America. In the expedition, his ships landed on Roanoke Island on July 4, 1584, and his men examined the shore. The people returned successfully. Because of this, Raleigh founded his second journey. He sent 100 people to the island of Roanoke on April 9, 1585, with high hopes of establishing a new colony. Unfortunately, things were not looking well.

While he was gone, the colonists were under attack by the Croatans. Just after the attack, a visiting Sir Francis Drake offered to bring the colonists back to Europe. The colonists were more than happy to accept the offer. That left no one to meet a clueless Grenville when he returned. He put 15 people to maintain Raleigh’s claim.
In 1587, Raleigh tried again to make the colony successful. He sent 117 colonists to the Chesapeake bay area, led by John White. However, the commander insisted they check the colony and repair the fort. When they got there, the 15 men were nowhere. All the evidence was a single skeleton.
The colonists were scared and told White to go to England to explain what was going on with the colony and get help. White agreed as long as if they found trouble, they will carve a cross on a tree nearby. 115 colonists, including White’s daughter and granddaughter, were waiting when White departed.
