Roald Dahl was born September 13, 1916 in Llandaff, Wales. His parents named him Roald after Roald Amundsen, because he was a Norwegian who had been the first man to reach the South Pole. Sofie Magdalene Dahl and Harald Dahl are Roald’s parents. They met in the United Kingdom. Later both, of them emigrated to Sarpsborg in Norway and later got married in 1880. Roald has a total of six siblings. Astri, Alfhild, Asta, Else, Louis, and Asta. Louis Dahl is the oldest out of seven children. Around the time Roald was four years old, his father Harald Dahl and his older sister Astri Dahl died. Astri had an infection from a burst appendix at the age of seven. This novel was directed to an adult audience. It is the first novel published that’s in the fictional genre on the nuclear war. This story is very dark, it was very exhausting writing this novel because he was admitted to the Military Hospital for head injuries.
After being invited to a dinner party, Roald met the love of his life Patricia Neal. Two years later they got married on July 2nd, 1953 at Trinity church in New York. At this time Roald Dahl was thirty-seven years old, Patricia was twenty-seven at the time. A couple years later, Roald and Patricia has their first baby Olivia Twenty Dahl. Two years later they had another child Tessa Dahl. Their third child was Theo Matthew Dahl. A little after he was brought home he was involved in a serious accident. His baby carriage got hit by a taxicab in New York. Theo suffered from a severe head injury, developing a medical condition called Hydrocephalus. Following the tragic accident the oldest daughter Olivia began to get sick, they realized she caught measles. At the time she was seven years old. The measles had turned into something worse, they called it measles encephalitis. Back then doctors didn’t have medicine or tools to cure it, so Olivia died a little after that. James and the Giant Peach was the best selling children's book at the time. Originally this book was published by Alfred A. Knopf. Seeing that Roald just lost his oldest daughter Olivia, he dedicated children's books to her. In every book the first couple of pages are completely dedicated to Olivia. In consideration that James and the Giant Peach was a famous book, Roald started working on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. In late September, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was published. Roald dedicated this book to his son Theo, he got the story line from his passion for chocolate and his school day memories. The film version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was released as Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory in 1971. For instance, Roald wrote a screenplay called You Only Live Twice. You Only Live Twice was about a private agent tries to stop space jackings. This story was adapted from Roald war friend Ian
