Roald Dahl is a famous author who had written many works throughout his life. He did not have an easy life despite how successful his career was. Death was a recurrence in his life; however, his children stories reflected a more cheerful atmosphere. He also wrote screenplays and horror stories; he even the script for the movies based on his books. Roald Dahl is more than just an author of children's books; he became a highly revered author that will not be forgotten.
Roald Dahl was born in Llandaff, Wales on September 13, 1916 (fantasybookreview.co.uk). He was named after Roald Amundsen, a Norwegian explorer. He had Norwegian parents named Harald and Sofie Dahl. Growing up he had two step-siblings and 3 sisters; he was Mrs. Dahl’s only son. At the age of three, one of his sisters died and soon after his father also died due to pneumonia (bbc.co.uk). He began assisting in writing the screenplays for You Only Live Twice in 1967 and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in 1968. His name appears in the credits of both films, because he assisted Ian Fleming the author. In 1971 he wrote the first screenplay for one of his written works, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory which was based on the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Roald Dahl was not thrilled with the movie version; on the contrary, it became very popular to children and adults (Beetz 2158). Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was the only screenplay Roald Dahl himself wrote for one of his books; however, Matilda, James and the Giant Peach, and others were made into films after his death (Nagle 46). Roald Dahl’s book series, Tales of the Unexpected was turned into a popular television show and in 2009 Fantastic Mr. Fox was also made into a movie
