It seems that in trying to preserve and protect American principles and values, we have forgotten what they actually were. A country founded in opposition to oppression takes part in it. That the United States whose existence is tied to the document that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is modeled after, violates the document all in the name of national security. I think The Road to Guantanamo puts all of this into perspective because as we watch their treatment and experiences in the prison and the United States’ military officers, we see everything that the United States stands for torn apart and degraded. We sit on this moral high horse based on our strong rights-based core, but other countries, including others whose track record of human rights is non-existent at best, have called us out on our hypocrisy. Every morning, millions of school children recite the pledge of allegiance ending with “with liberty and justice for all” while prisoners remain in Guantanamo Bay Prison waiting the be charged.
