This refers to the leaves that were stepped by many people that had passed by through the pathway. The dirt from the shoes that people wore had stained the leaves which showed slow decomposition of the leaves (made the leaves turner darker). The author focuses on colours, such as yellow and black that were directly mentioned from the poem, in the woods, the speaker was travelling from was described as the colour yellow.
