Past civilizations have contributed many things that have influenced future, or present, civilizations. To look at a few in specific, ancient river valley civilizations such as Mesopotamia, Egypt, and China have each contributed their own systems/inventions.
Mesopotamia brought a writing system and a set of laws. The Sumerians of Mesopotamia created cuneiform, the world’s first written language (Doc 1). According to Doc 1, they used this writing “to keep track of business dealings.” Records could now be kept, that could be passed onto future generations (Doc 1). Writing (not of the same sort, but writing nonetheless) was then seen again in Hammurabi’s Code. This code was the most complete set of laws, used to govern and protect people (Doc 2). Such sets of laws and writing are seen present in future civilizations as well. Different kinds of writing are still used to keep records and communicate. Laws are also in place to govern and protect areas today. Mesopotamia’s contributions have influenced future civilizations.

Confucianism was a philosophy on how people should live their lives, according to Confucius (Doc 5). Confucianism was to teach each person their role in society and how to play it. It was the “basis for order and respect and was central in governing China” (Doc 5). China also contributed many inventions such as porcelain, paper, ink and gunpowder (Doc 6). They then traded along the Silk Road. This helped China become wealthier and prosper while leading to cultural diffusion (Doc 6).
