Fear can change someone further in life , because of the pressure of hatred created between a bitter feud. Not only has fear been present in Fences, but also in the short story called “Popular Mechanics”. Fear can be examined through how the mother’s words were against the father’s child. The unnamed woman says,” You’re not touching the baby, she said. The baby has began to cry and she uncovered the blanket from around his head” (Carver pg. 1) In “Popular Mechanics”, a couple have been in a feud over their child. The woman is trying to protect her child from her husband who wants to take it. The author Carver has also been using a specific tone to create fear like August Wilson. The mother sounded as she was strict and serious to manipulate the man to leave the innocent child alone.
