Motherhood is one of the most demanding and toughest roles a woman can be in. Many girls grow up fantasizing about meeting their prince charming, getting married, and starting a family. However, they do not realize the challenges within marriage, and raising a family that lies ahead of them. Most women feel expected to run the household, raise their children, and tend to their husband’s needs. Women take on many responsibilities within the home and have different shoes to fill as it if was a full time job in itself. Rita Dove’s “Daystar” poem illustrates just that. The poem describes a mother who is caring for her family and responsible for the household chores. This can cause the mother to feel overwhelmed by the demands of her young child and husband. All she would like is some privacy to call her own. The woman in the poem looks forward to her child’s nap so she can divert for an hour once a day for unobtrusive time just to sit and do nothing. I myself am a mother and wife. Finding private time for oneself is tough to come by, sometimes there is a struggle to find individual gratification. On occasion a sense of loss and loneliness takes over due to the dedication to daily tasks of taking care of a family. This ultimately can make them feel overwhelmed causing them to feel trapped and unworthy. Dove’s portrayal of the mother allowed us to sympathize with her, and visually taking the reader through her words that portray a typical day of a busy mother. When one hears the title “Daystar” they may get the impression that it may pertain or suggest to something glamorous and glitzy.
