The “Riso-Hudson Enneagram Type Indicator” (RHETI) is a personality inventory created by the Hudson and Riso (1999), a sample of the test with a quarter of the total questions is available on the website 9types. The goal of the test is to determine the personality of the subject by classifying them into one of nine personality types. Each of the nine distinct personality types are defined by a set of characteristics which are common to individuals of that type. To format of the test is each question consists of two contrasting statements and the subject must choose which of the two statements better applies to them, for example one of the questions asked whether you are more likely to take on confrontations or avoid confrontations. Since the test is 144 questions long, it can wear down the subject and lead them to answer honestly instead of trying to manipulate the test into certain results. The way the results are given are also a way to try to minimize manipulation of the test since each of the types have a variety of characteristics, with some overlap, it makes it hard to choose results in a way to guarantee a type. The answers available in the test are either statement or skipping the question, which is similar to another well-known personality inventory, the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and it is one of the ways that the MMPI ensures a high validity from its test (McCord 2018). The RHETI has low construct validity which is roughly, whether the thing being measured by the test is real or not (Cronbach and Meehl, 1955). This is because the types of the Enneagram are defined by characteristics which are correlated with each other and form a personality type which contradicts the big five personality trait approach. For example, one of the types of the Enneagram is roughly described as a personality which is highly introverted as well as neurotic, but these two traits are accepted to be non-correlated.
